Meaning of Life: "...[This is] a time when something awful is happening to a civilization, when it ceases to produce poets, and, what is even more crucial, when it ceases in any way whatever to believe in the report that only the poets can make. Conrad told us a long time ago: Woe to that man who does not put his trust in life. Henry James said, Live, live all you can. It's a mistake not to. And Shakespeare said and this is what I take to be the truth about everybody's life all of the time Out of this nettle, danger, we pluck this flower, safety. Art is here to prove, and to help one bear, the fact that all safety is an illusion. In this sense, all artists are divorced from and even necessarily opposed to any system whatever." -- James Baldwin, "The Artist's Struggle for Integrity"
Five Things I Can't Live Without: Outside of clean water, good food, and my loved ones: 1. Internet 2. Writing & Art Materials 3. Books 4. Music 5. Massage
Favorite Books: Asking a writer to tell you her favorite books can honestly feel a bit like asking a chocoholic to tell you their favorite incarnation of delight when they have several all tied for first place. I sentimentally love The Giver quartet of books (The Giver, Gathering Blue, Messenger, Son) because I just really enjoyed them as a child - they were literature I sank into, rather than gnawing on like I did when I was scurrying through the classics or trying to bore my little 9-year-old way through Plato's Republic. Dining with Humpty Dumpty by Reba Maybury, because it's a scorchingly witty, hilarious articulation of the cluelessness of entitled men who only play at desires of giving up control. Seventy Eight Degrees of Wisdom by Rachel Pollack, because it was the first book on Tarot I ever read and that changed my life. Bloodchild by Octavia Butler, because it was the first work of science fiction I ever read by a Black woman, and I didn't know that Black girls could write science fiction, too, because I grew up reading fiction written by white men who oftentimes imagined a world without people like me in it. American Gods by Neil Gaiman. I'd fight Amanda for him, but American The Hobbit, because it was my first introduction to Tolkien and the concept of world building, which to this day is something I do as a random hobby purely for my own pleasure. Notes of a Native Son by James Baldwin. Because it's James. Because he freed me as writer. Because I carry him in my heart and he sits on the tip of my fingers when I write and I reach for him in everything I do with my writing career. I write to make him proud.
Favorite Songs: James Baldwin's "A Lover's Question." - I'd argue that his recording was really one of the earliest predecessors to contemporary rap music, and it has a number of the musical qualities that show up in contemporary R&B and rap now. I used to play piano (part of why I'm here - I want to get back into it!) on a mixed repertoire of jazz and classical music. I deeply love + admire Nina Simone as a musician and as an exceptionally gifted and moving pianist, Hazel Scott was amazing on the keys, and Margaret Bonds is another one of my inspirations. Beyonc's Homecoming album is iconic. Idc idc. Green Day, Fall Out Boy, and Panic! At The Disco will always be favourites. Other favourites: Alabama Shakes, Tank and the Bangas, Ibeyi, OSHUN, Wardruna. La Negra Tiene Tumbao by Celia Cruz is one of my favourite pick-me-ups, and her album, Homenaje a Los Santos, is one of my favourites. And I'd crawl to hell and back for a first row seat to a Jamila Woods concert. I also enjoy a lot of contemporary rap, etc. I'm pretty open-minded about music except for metal and super twangy country, because I have sensory processing sensitivities.
Favorite Movies: The Birdcage (La Cage Aux Folles) - Parts of it haven't aged well, but Robin Williams and Nathan Lane together make me laugh so hard I cry every time I watch it. Pan's Labyrinth - I don't have a good reason. The storytelling was compelling, the acting was fantastic, and the cinematography + set design was also fucking delightful. Black Panther for the Afrofuturist culture.
Craziest Thing I've Ever Done: Reading Tarot for the actual Miss Cleo (rest in peace, Ms. Youree) at an art & live music party somewhere in South Florida in my early 20s. That was a wild experience.
If I Could Be Anywhere Right Now: Laying on a beach in Mauritius, attended to by a hot cabana boy who fulfills my every wish and cravings for fresh fruit, with the ability to soak in a big, comfortable tub every night before crawling into a luxurious king-sized bed to sleep.
Hobbies: art crafts kickboxing pole dancing witchcraft/spirituality reading piano comedy stardew valley writing swimming divination
Best Reason to Get to Know Me: I'm here because I am practicing being visible/seen, using my physical voice, and to help me develop a routine for self-care and sleep. The income part of it helps support me while I pursue my career as an artist and a writer! :) I have worked for myself since I was 18, so I decided to try camming after dabbling with other forms of online entertaining.
