My last (family) name is 'Wright' It is occupational and was used to describe a maker of machinery or objects, mostly in wood. The derivation is from the Olde English pre 7th century word 'wyrhta' meaning a craftsman. A prefix added describes a specialty to work or construct as in boatwright, wheelwright, cartwright, millwright and wainwright. The name without prefix has grown to mean a craftsman skilled in many professions. I am proud to say and recognize myself as truly a 'Wright'.
